Cosmetic Dentistry for children and teens.
Children who have damaged, discolored or missing
front teeth sometimes have problems with self-esteem that can be improved with cosmetic
dentistry. Many parents and some dentists feel that because these are only “baby
teeth,” they don't need to be treated especially if the child is not in pain.
However self-image is very important for the child. Many a times children don’t
smile because of the way their front teeth appears. Some even cover their mouth
with their hands. Cosmetic dentistry improves the child’s self esteem and
enhances their smile. Cosmetic dentistry could be in the form of tooth colored fillings,
tooth colored anterior and posterior crowns.

Restorations
Silver fillings, pulpotomies (commonly called as
baby root canal therapy).
|
Preventive treatment .
Fluoride applications and oral prophylaxis with regular
oral hygiene instructions.
|
Sealant Therapy.
The chewing surfaces of molars are easily susceptible
to cavities in children. Made of clear or shaded plastic, sealants protect these
grooved and pitted surfaces of the molars to prevent tooth decay.
|
Space Maintenance.
Sometimes baby teeth have to be extracted way before their time
of exfoliation due to extensive cavities that cannot be restored. Such cases need
a space maintainer that keeps the space intact for permanent teeth to erupt at the
appropriate time.
|
Habit Breaking Appliances
Some prolonged habits like mouth breathing, thumb
sucking, lip biting, tongue thrusting etc cause abnormal pressure on teeth and palate.
Such cases can be treated by habit breaking fixed appliances that help children
overcome the habit.

Mouth Guards
When a child begins to participate in recreational
activities and organized sports, injuries can occur. A properly fitted mouth guard,
or mouth protector, is an important piece of athletic gear that can help protect
your child’s smile, and should be used during any activity that could result
in a blow to the face or mouth.
Mouth guards help prevent broken teeth, and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or
jaw. A properly fitted mouth guard will stay in place while your child is wearing
it, making it easy for them to talk and breathe.

Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide
Some children are given nitrous oxide/oxygen, or better known as
happy air or relaxing air, to relax them during dental treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen
is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is given
through a small breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose, allowing
them to relax, but without putting them to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatric
Dentistry, recognizes this technique as a very safe, effective technique to use
for treating children’s dental needs. While inhaling nitrous oxide/oxygen,
your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes.
IV Sedation
Is recommended for apprehensive children, very young children,
and children with special needs that would not work well under chair side. The dentist
performs the dental treatment in our office with the child anesthetized under IV
sedation, which is administered and monitored by an anesthesiologist.
Hospital Sedation Dentistry
Dr.Sucheta has privileges to Kaiser Roseville and Kaiser Vacaville hospitals to perform
dental procedures under general anesthesia or IV sedation for children with special
needs, very young children with Early Childhood Caries or children with very high
dental anxiety.

fractures of teeth may require a root canal therapy if need be or can be treated
by giving esthetic crowns. Severe fractures often mean a traumatized tooth with
low chances of recovery.
